Nvidia has announced a new graphics card that is specifically designed for Chinese markets in order to comply with US export controls. The company has introduced the RTX 4090D in China. So, what’s different about this one? Well, This GPU is less powerful than the RTX 4090 flagship graphics card sold elsewhere.
The RTX 4090D has fewer CUDA cores compared to its global counterpart, with a maximum of 14,592 cores instead of 16,384.It also has a slightly lower power draw of 425W as opposed to 450W. Although most of the other specs remain the same between the two versions of the chips, the RTX 4090D is still about “5% slower in gaming and creating,” according to Nvidia spokesperson Benjamin Berraondo.
The RTX 4090 D is “5% slower in gaming and creating” but still offers a “quantum leap in performance, efficiency, and AI-driven graphics,” said the Nvidia spokesperson.
In 2022, the US export rules were made more stringent, which prompted Nvidia to release less powerful versions of its chips for the Chinese market. However, in October, the US government implemented even stricter performance standards, as the government limits access to specialised chips in the Chinese market to slow down the advancement of the country’s artificial intelligence capabilities.
Jensen Huang, the Chief Executive Officer, announced that the company plans to create versions of his company’s market-leading products that comply with the export rules imposed by the Biden administration on China.
“The GeForce RTX 4090 D has been designed to comply with US government export controls and will only be available at retail in China,” said Berraondo. The company has stated that it engaged extensively with the US government during the development of the graphics product, which will be available in January.
