VIJAYAWADA: The Andhra Pradesh government has decided to extend the occupational health allowance to the drivers of sanitation vehicles, underground drainage and malaria workers.
Workers engaged by the urban civic bodies will get a Rs 6,000 monthly allowance in addition to their existing wage. The state government has been granting the occupational health allowance to all sanitation workers for the past four years.
The additional allowance to the sanitation workers in municipalities and corporations is being granted keeping in view the promise of chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy.
“We have been giving the occupational allowance to the workers since August 2019 which helped the sanitation workers get around Rs.18000-Rs.21000 per month wage. This is almost double the wages they have drawn in the past,” said special chief secretary (municipal administration and urban development) Y Srilakshmi.
She said that the workers’s unions have recently requested the state government to grant the occupational health allowance to the drivers of the sanitation vehicles, malaria workers and UGD workers as they were also facing health issues due to their involvement in garbage shifting and drain cleaning.
Commissioner and Director of Municipal Administration (CDMA) P Koteswara Rao also made a recommendation to consider the request of the worker’s unions.
Taking the requests into consideration, the state government on Monday issued a GO granting the occupational health allowance to the three additional categories of workers.
This is one of the 13 demands of the striking sanitation workers across the state.
Although the workers’ union had also demanded to include park workers in the list to get the occupational health allowance, the state government had confined the additional benefit only to three categories — UGD workers, malaria workers and sanitation vehicle drivers.
