It appears that Google is up to something with Android‘s AirDrop rival. Well, it is not related to the functionality the Nearby Share offers, it’s the name that’s expected to change in future.
A recent report suggests that Google is planning to rebrand the Nearby Share feature to “Quick Share”.
The change was spotted by an X user named Kamila. The post reads, “It seems like Google’s renaming Nearby Share to… Quick Share, which is also the name for Samsung’s file sharing solution? uhhhhh”
“Today I received a GMS update to version 23.50.13 and, soon after that, the notification from the screenshot above. The update as well as the features themselves are not widely rolling out yet.”
According to the post, GMS got updated to version 23.50.13 and it changed the name of Nearby Share to Quick Share. Now, Samsung has a similar feature in their Galaxy devices and it acts as an alternative to Android’s native Nearby Share feature.
Kamila has also mentioned that the user interface of the Nearby Share has also been updated after the rebranding. This includes the changes in the share sheet and the quick settings.
The reason behind the rebranding is unknown
Google hasn’t officially announced the rebranding of the Nearby Share nor do we have any information behind the change. That said, it is also unknown whether this has something to do with Samsung or not.
We all know, Samsung and Google work together to introduce new features in their devices and the entire Android ecosystem. However, clarity about this feature is not there as of now.
