NEW DELHI: Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, who played a key role in ensuring BJP‘s landslide victory in the state polls, on Tuesday said he is not a contender to lead the next government in the state.
“I have neither been a contender for the chief minister (post) earlier nor am I today. As a party worker, I have always carried out whatever work has been assigned by the BJP with dedication and to the best of my ability, genuineness and honesty,” Chouhan said in a video statement shared on his official X account.
The senior BJP leader said he is heading to Chhindwara, where the party could not win a single seat.”Tomorrow, I am going to Chhindwara, where we failed to win any of the seven seats (in the district). I have resolved that the BJP should win all 29 Lok Sabha constituencies in Madhya Pradesh and Narendra Modi should become the country’s PM (again),” Chouhan said.
The popularity of MP government’s Ladli behna scheme is said to be one of the reasons for the BJP’s huge win in the state. In a video statement, Shivraj Singh Chouhan thanked the “Ladli Behnas” for supporting the party in the assembly elections.
His remarks on the top post come amid suspense over who will be chosen as chief minister of the state after the BJP won 163 seats in the 230-member assembly. The BJP did not project any leader as its chief ministerial candidate. In fact, the saffron party fielded several MPs to contest the state elections to counter anti-incumbency against the Shivraj Singh Chouhan government.
It will be interesting to see if Shivraj Singh Chouhan gets another term as chief minister by the party high command or the BJP decides to introduce a new line of leadership in the state. With Lok Sabha elections just months away, the BJP leadership would want the momentum of assembly elections to continue in the national polls so that the saffron party manages to win all the 29 parliamentary seats.
In 2019, the BJP had won 28 Lok Sabha seats while the Congress could manage only one. Kamal Nath’s son and Congress candidate Nakul Nath had won from Chhindwara.
BJP leaders like Union ministers Prahlad Patel, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Narendra Singh Tomar and party’s national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya are among the other probables for the top post. All of them credit the massive BJP win in the state to Prime Minister Modi.
Kailash Vijayvargiya, who has been elected as an MLA from Madhya Pradesh asserted that it was Modi’s leadership behind the massive mandate and not any particular scheme of the state government headed by chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
When asked if the ‘Ladli Behna’ scheme played a role in the big win in the state, he shot back and questioned “Was the Ladli Behna scheme there in Chhattisgarh or Rajasthan.”
While chouhan remains the strongest contender, he will keep his fingers crossed because the BJP leadership is known for making surprise chief ministerial picks in the past.
