Valve launched its latest handheld gaming device, the Steam Deck OLED a few weeks ago. This new gaming device is an updated version of the Steam Deck which was launched earlier. The biggest highlight of the latest handheld gaming device is that it uses an OLED display which improves the gaming experience. Currently, Samsung Display is reportedly supplying the OLED panels for this handheld gaming device.
According to a report by Sammobile, Chinese display manufacturer BOE was also expected to supply OLED displays for the latest Steam Deck. But that might not happen. Earlier, Samsung filed a lawsuit against BOE in the US. This lawsuit may stop BOE from stealing Steam Deck OLED panel orders from Samsung.
Samsung lawsuit against BOE: Key details
Last month, Samsung filed a lawsuit with the United States International Trade Commission against BOE. The South Korean tech giant claimed that BOE had violated laws on unfair methods of competition. The smartphone maker also alleged that the Chinese display supplier was infringing on Samsung’s patents for OLED display components and modules. The trial is expected to begin in January 2024 with Samsung expected to seek restitution for the damages it claims to have been caused by this infringement.
Currently, Samsung is the lone supplier of the 7.4-inch OLED display that Valve is using for the Steam Deck OLED. With 3 million units of the latest Steam Deck expected to be shipped this year, this deal can be of significant value to Samsung.
It is important to note that the original Steam Deck that Valve launched in 2022 features a 7-inch LCD panel that was also supplied by BOE. So, considering the relationship between the companies and the display supplier’s tendency to aggressively undercut Samsung’s prices (as the lawsuit claims) would have made BOE a supplier for Valve’s latest Steam Deck OLED.
