NEW DELHI: Bangladesh secured a four-wicket win over Sri Lanka, clinching the One Day International (ODI) series with a 2-1 victory. The hosts chased down a modest target of 236 runs, propelled by a fiery 48-run innings from Rishad Hossain, following Tanzid Hasan Tamim‘s solid knock of 84 off 81 balls on Monday.
Facing a target of 236 after Sri Lanka set it with Janith Liyanage‘s unbeaten century, Bangladesh raced to victory, reaching 237-6 in just 40.2 overs.Rishad’s unbeaten 48 off just 18 balls proved pivotal in steering his team to victory, as he unleashed a flurry of boundaries and sixes, totaling four and five respectively.
The match hung in balance when Wanindu Hasaranga dismissed Mehdiy Hasan Miraz for 25 runs, leaving Bangladesh 58 runs shy of victory. However, Rishad’s explosive batting turned the tide, smashing a six off the first ball he faced and continued his onslaught until the end.
Reflecting on the match, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto praised Tanzid’s early contributions and highlighted the resilience of his bowlers on a challenging pitch. “Tanzid batted really well at the start. On a wicket like this, the bowlers showed a lot of character,” Shanto remarked.
Earlier in the game, Liyanage’s heroic century had provided Sri Lanka with a competitive total. Despite losing early wickets, including both openers within four overs, Liyanage held his ground, crafting his maiden ODI century with grit and determination.

Sri Lankan skipper Kusal Mendis acknowledged his team’s efforts but lamented falling short by 40-50 runs. “Janith (Liyanage) batted really well,” Mendis remarked, acknowledging Liyanage’s pivotal role in the innings.
Bangladesh’s Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman starred with the ball, claiming three wickets and two wickets respectively, while Rishad marked his debut with a memorable wicket.
With this victory, Bangladesh secured the ODI series after splitting the first two matches. The focus now shifts to the upcoming two-match Test series, set to commence on Friday in Sylhet.
