Filmmaker Kiran Rao recently spoke about the dynamics of the film industry, particularly regarding the significance of opening day collections, audience feedback, and the cautious approach filmmakers must adopt in the current climate. While expressing her joy with the positive reception received by her latest project Laapataa Ladies, Kiran also expressed her desire to watch Sandeep Reddy Vanga‘s all-time blockbuster Animal, starring Ranbir Kapoor.
In her interview with The Lallantop, Kiran acknowledged the impact of a strong opening day at the box office. “I don’t have any regrets that we did not cast Aamir, but that one opening day definitely makes a difference,” she remarked while discussing the industry’s fixation on the opening weekend and the initial audience feedback.
“Everybody is obsessed with the opening weekend and what kind of feedback you’re getting in the first three days. The feedback is very good, actually the love the film is getting I am really really grateful, honestly,” she explained.
Addressing the evolving preferences of audiences, Kiran noted a trend towards action-oriented films with elements of VFX, thrills, and violence. “Usually, the audience only likes the film and not the critics. And nowadays, audiences have been enjoying watching certain kind of films like Animal that are more action-packed.”

Commenting on the success of Animal, Kiran expressed curiosity and interest in watching the film. “I have not seen it, I want to see it actually. It is important to watch because it has done so well, it’s a huge hit and people have loved it. So I am very keen to see it. And I have heard Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s craft is very good. And Ranbir Kapoor is a good actor. So it will certainly be an interesting watch for me but people seem to love it,” she admitted.

Kiran also stressed the importance of caution for filmmakers in navigating sensitive issues, particularly in a time where any misstep could lead to legal complications. “Filmmakers need to be very careful before saying anything. You have to be very careful because people stop our films. Someone files a case or someone gets offended then they raise a stay order for your film,” she advised.
She concluded with a caution, “You should never make political statements in today’s time, because we really want to keep making movies all our life.”
