NEW DELHI: The intensity of the India-England cricket rivalry was on full display during the second day of the 5th Test match as James Anderson got himself involved in a heated verbal exchange with Shubman Gill.
While Gill remained tight-lipped about the content of their conversation during a post-match interview, Anderson has now shed light on the incident during an appearance on BBC’s Tailenders podcast.
Anderson, who reached the historic milestone of 700 Test wickets in the match, recalled his interaction with Gill after dismissing the Indian batter for 110 runs. “I said something to him like, ‘Do you get any runs outside India?’ and he said, ‘It’s time to retire.’ Then two balls later, I got him out,” revealed the England veteran, providing insight into the on-field banter.
Anderson’s wit and Gill’s spirited response captured the attention of cricket enthusiasts worldwide. Anderson’s achievement of reaching 700 Test wickets was a significant milestone in his illustrious career.

In the podcast, Anderson also shared an interesting tidbit about Kuldeep’s prediction, revealing that the Indian spinner had anticipated being Anderson’s 700th scalp.
“‘I’m going to be your 700th wicket.’ He wasn’t saying he was trying to get out, he was just saying he had a feeling. We both laughed at it,” the 41-year-old said. He claimed his 700th victim when he dismissed India’s Kuldeep Yadav during the match at Dharamshala, becoming the first pace bowler to accomplish this feat.
