NEW DELHI: With senior pros Virat Kohli and KL Rahul missing out and the likes of Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane not in the scheme of things anymore, India’s batting-order looked quite fragile ahead of the marquee series against England.
The young talents, who were given an opportunity had a pressure to perform but the next-gen stars passed the litmus test with flying colors as India on Saturday wrapped up the series with a 4-1 win.
During the tough series, India found the next stars in Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sarfaraz Khan and Dhruv Jurel as they took on powerhouse England head on, producing incredible performances one after another.
After the series wrapped up on Sunday, India head coach Rahul Dravid heaped praise on the youngsters and was mighty impressed with their performances in the series.
“Proud of the team. To go behind in the first Test was disappointing but to bounce back was great. We have always found people to step up. In various situations we have been put under pressure. Obviously we missed a few key players but we believe there is an incredible amount of talent in India. Terrific to see youngsters do well. Performances were all-round as went down our whole squad, that was the pleasing thing. I have the privilege of working with a lovely team, it’s not just about me. I am learning from them all the time,” Dravid said after the match.
While Jaiswal bagged the Player of the Series award for scoring most runs — 712 — in the series, Shubman Gill had 452 runs to his name.
Sarfaraz had three fifties to his name and Jurel too was mighty impressive in the series with both bat and gloves.
The head coach also appreciated the work of the selectors, who have been tirelessly working behind the scenes, providing the team with the best options.
“Shout out to Ajit (Agarkar) and his team (selection panel) as well. As a coach or captain you don’t actually get to see a lot of the youngsters that come in. They picked the right ones and they have come here and performed. Not easily being a selector. Big pat on the back for Ajit and his team as well,” Dravid added.
India wrapped up the Dharamsala inside three days to hand England their heaviest defeat of the Bazball era.
