Google is working on a new feature for its Phone app that will allow users to react to phone calls with animated sound effects, according to code discovered in the app’s latest beta version by Android news outlet TheSpAndroid.
The upcoming feature, internally referred to as “Audiomojis,” will give users the option to play short sound clips during a phone call conversation, accompanied by corresponding animations on the screen. As spotted by AssembleDebug, there are six sound files in the Phone app beta, including reactions like applause, laughter, a drum roll, and a “poop” sound effect.
It is not yet clear how the sound effects and animations will surface in the user interface or if both parties on the call will be able to hear and see them. One possibility proposed by AssembleDebug is that Google may limit the Audiomojis only to display when using the app’s Call Screen feature.
The addition of whimsical sound reactions could bring more personality and fun to often mundane phone call interactions. Messaging apps like Google’s own Messages already allow users to react to texts with emojis, so applying similar reactive features to calls would mirror that trend.
While Google has not officially announced the in-development Audiomojis, internal references to “sound reactions” features date back to last September before being removed in subsequent updates. The latest return of the concept under a new Audiomoji name suggests Google remains interested in launching call reactions for a more engaging calling experience.
The default calling interface on many Android phones is the Google Phone application, which typically doesn’t receive major upgrades. However, in recent years, the app has introduced some noteworthy features, such as eccentric sound effects and animations.
As the feature has only been spotted in beta code so far, there is no guarantee it will reach general consumers. If call reactions successfully graduate from beta, Google may have found another promising method of resurrecting the phone call for Generation Z.
