NEW DELHI: India U-19 World Cup standout Musheer Khan played a crucial role in Mumbai’s recovery on the opening day of the Ranji Trophy quarterfinal against Baroda. Facing a challenging situation, Mumbai found themselves at 99 for four after opting to bat at the BKC Ground.
Eighteen-year-old Musheer, who had an impressive run in the recently-concluded U-19 World Cup in South Africa, showcased his talent with a well-crafted maiden first-class century.
He scored an unbeaten 128 runs off 216 balls, including 10 fours. Musheer’s innings was instrumental in leading Mumbai’s recovery, forming key partnerships after the team’s early setbacks.
The younger brother of India batter Sarfaraz Khan, Musheer replaced the injured all-rounder Shivam Dube in the playing eleven. Baroda’s experienced campaigner, Bhargav Bhatt, played a pivotal role in Mumbai’s early troubles by claiming the wickets of Prithvi Shaw (33), Bhupen Lalwani (19), and Ajinkya Rahane (3).
Prithvi Shaw started well, contributing 33 runs with six boundaries, but was stumped by Baroda’s wicketkeeper off Bhatt. Lalwani and Rahane’s dismissals further added to Mumbai’s woes.
Musheer’s resilient batting stabilized the innings, first with a 43-run partnership with Suryansh Shedge (20) for the fifth wicket and later an unbeaten 106-run stand with Hardik Tamore. Tamore played a supporting role with an unbeaten 30 off 163 balls.
The players observed a two-minute silence at the beginning of the day to pay respects to the late former Maharashtra chief minister and Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) president, Manohar Joshi. The Mumbai team also wore black armbands in his memory during the match.
Brief Scores:
Mumbai 1st innings: 248/5 in 90 overs (Prithvi Shaw 33, Musheer Khan 128 batting, Hardik Tamore 30 batting; Bhargav Bhatt 4/82) vs Baroda.
