Air India and Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL), both part of the Tata Group, are set to invest Rs 2,300 crore in various projects in Karnataka. According to official announcement, these projects are expected to provide employment to approximately 1,650 people.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony was attended by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Large and Medium Industries Minister M B Patil, among others.The investments are projected to create around 1,600 direct jobs and over 25,000 indirect jobs within the state.
Air India aims to establish a Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility and position Bengaluru as the aviation hub of South India. The project, which is expected to cost around Rs 1,300 crore, will directly employ about 1,200 people.
A study by the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) suggests that the creation of the hub will increase the number of passengers handled by eight Million Passengers Per Annum (MPPA). This is expected to provide direct and indirect employment opportunities for 25,000 to 26,000 individuals, due to an increase in business activity, support staff, and tourism in Karnataka.
TASL plans to initiate three projects with a total investment of Rs 1,030 crore. These include a Passenger to Freighter Aircraft Conversion facility (Rs 420 crore), a gun manufacturing facility (Rs 310 crore), and Aerospace and Defence Research and Development in Karnataka (Rs 300 crore). These projects are expected to directly employ 450 individuals.
TASL also plans to source over half of its 13,000 parts from Karnataka for its gun manufacturing facility. This is estimated to provide employment for 2,000-3,000 individuals across 300-350 small and medium enterprises.
Air India will carry out maintenance, repairs, and overhauls of aircraft at the Bengaluru airport. Meanwhile, Tata Advanced Systems will establish manufacturing and research & development facilities in the state, according to the government.
Tata Advanced Systems is known for manufacturing cargo and bulk cargo doors for the A320neo family of aircraft, produced by European planemaker Airbus.
