NEW DELHI: South Africa seized a 31-run first-innings lead against New Zealand on day two of the second Test at Seddon Park, as the hosts were skittled out for 211.
Off-spinner Dane Piedt led the charge for South Africa with impressive figures of 5-89, while seamer Dane Paterson contributed with 3-39 as the Proteas dismantled New Zealand’s lower order, claiming the last seven wickets for just 66 runs after tea.

The hosts were rescued from a more dismal total by Neil Wagner’s spirited 27-ball 33, including two hefty sixes, which offered some resistance against the South African attack.
Despite low expectations for South Africa’s relatively inexperienced squad, especially with the absence of seasoned players participating in Cricket South Africa‘s Twenty20 competition, the Proteas showed resilience and determination in Hamilton.

New Zealand, coming off a comfortable 281-run victory in the firstTest, initially seemed poised for a solid batting performance. However, opener Devon Conway’s struggles continued, and skipper Kane Williamson‘s departure for 43 added to their woes.
After reaching tea at 121/3, New Zealand’s hopes of a strong recovery were dashed as quick wickets fell after the break. Tshepo Moreki made an impact early, removing Rachin Ravindra, while Paterson accounted for Tom Blundell and skipper Tim Southee.
Piedt, who had earlier dismissed Williamson and Tom Latham, continued to trouble the New Zealand batsmen. His crucial wickets included dangerman Glenn Phillips and Will Young, who fell to an ill-judged shot.
New Zealand’s resistance was finally broken when Wagner fell victim to Piedt’s guile, leaving the hosts all out for 211.
South Africa’s unexpected lead sets the stage for an intriguing remainder of the test match, as both teams vie for supremacy in the series.
