NEW DELHI: Congress matriarch Sonia Gandhi is likely to figure in the party’s list of nominations to Rajya Sabha, several media reports said on Monday. The buzz in the party is that Sonia may come to the upper House from Himachal Pradesh or Rajasthan.
Party sources said Sonia is unlikely to contest the Lok Sabha elections due to health reasons and a Rajya Sabha seat will help her to stay in Parliament, besides also helping in some other logistical issues.
Congress leaders are meeting at party chief Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence in Delhi on Monday to discuss the Rajya Sabha elections. Sonia Gandhi, Mukul Wasnik, Ajay Maken, KC Venugopal, and Salman Khurshid are among the senior leaders scheduled to attend the meeting.
Media reports also said that Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will be contesting the Lok Sabha elections from Rae Bareli, which Sonia has been representing since 2004.
