NEW DELHI: Former Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan, who quit the Congress on Monday, said he has not thought of joining any other party and will decide his future course of political action in the next couple of days. This even as Maharashtra deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis dropped a hint as he claimed several Congress leaders were in touch to join the BJP.
“I have quit the Congress Party, as MLA and from all other party posts today… I have broken all my involvement with the party. I have no complaints and till yesterday I worked honestly for the party,” said Chavan in his first reaction after leaving the grand old party.
When asked about his surprise move, Chavan said “There may be some reasons. But I am not the kind to wash dirty linen in public. I don’t have to tell everything in public. It’s not in my nature to talk of any individuals in public.” He also rubbished speculation that he was ‘in touch’ with other Congress MLAs to quit along with him.
There are strong speculations that Chavan will join the BJP. He is the third big name to desert the Congress ship in Maharashtra following the exit of former South Mumbai MP Milind Deora and former MLA Baba Siddique. Deora had dumped the Congress on January 14 to join Shiv Sena led by chief minister Eknath Shinde while Baba Ziauddin Siddique quit the grand old party to join Nationalist Congress Party led by Deputy CM Ajit Pawar.
When asked about the latest political developments, Maharashtra deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis claimed several Congress leaders were in touch with the BJP. “Several tall leaders of other parties want to join BJP. Especially, several Congress leaders are in touch with us because of the behaviour of the senior leaders. They are feeling suffocated in their party. Who all are in our contact that will be revealed soon. Aage aage dekhiye hota hain kya,” Fadnavis said.
Earlier today, Chavan submitted his resignation to the state Congress President Nana Patole. Sparking hectic political activity, Chavan, 66, called on Maharashtra assembly speaker Rahul Narwekar this morning before going incommunicado. A few hours later Chavan’s resignation letter surfaced, he changed his profile on X and then tweeted details that he has quit the Congress. In his letter, he has also written by hand ‘former’ (maaji) MLA from Bhokar Assembly constituency, but has not cited any reasons for his move.
