Apple has revealed that iOS 17 adoption is slightly lagging behind its predecessor, iOS 16, despite a strong initial rollout. According to the numbers shared by Apple on its developer site, iOS 17 is currently running on 76% of iPhones. Out of iPhones launched within the past four years, 20% continue to operate on iOS 16, with an additional 4% using older operating systems. Among all active iPhones, 66% are powered by iOS 17, while 23% still operate on iOS 16, and 11% are running earlier iOS versions.
Interestingly, this marks a significant shift from last year’s statistics. At this time in 2023, a whopping 81 percent of iPhones from the past four years were operating on iOS 16, indicating a slower adoption rate for iOS 17
Similarly, iPadOS installation numbers reveal that 61 percent of recent iPad models boast iPadOS 17, while 29 percent are still on iPadOS 16, and 10 percent are trailing with older iterations.
However, the pace seems to be picking up as only 53 percent of iPads were on iPadOS 16 in February 2023, showcasing a faster adoption rate for iPadOS 17 compared to its predecessor.
iOS 17.4 set to bring major changes
Apple released iOS 17 in September and since then a few major upgrades have come out. In March, it is expected that Apple will roll out iOS 17 which will bring huge changes for users in Europe. For instance, Apple is introducing new controls that allow users to select a third-party contactless payment app — or an alternative app marketplace — as their default. Under the European Union’s Digital Markets Act, Apple has been forced to make some changes. “Inevitably, the new options for developers’ EU apps create new risks to Apple users and their devices. Apple can’t eliminate those risks, but within the DMA’s constraints, the company will take steps to reduce them,” Apple said in a press release announcing changes coming to users in the EU.
