NEW DELHI: Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has urged the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to adopt a unified captaincy policy across all formats to avoid internal conflicts and infighting.
Afridi’s suggestion comes after star batter Babar Azam stepped down from captaincy in all three formats following Pakistan’s early exit from the ODI World Cup last year.
Afridi emphasized the need for a single captain for all formats, eliminating the vice-captaincy role to provide clarity and a clear chain of command within the team. Speaking to reporters, Afridi stated, “The PCB must have one captain for all formats and there is no need to have a vice-captain. This will give a clear message to all players who are in charge.”
Supporting team director Mohammad Hafeez, Afridi urged the PCB to offer long-term contracts to the captain and team management, advocating for a minimum three-year term.
“If you think Muhammad Hafeez is good, then don’t just judge him on one series; give him proper time, and the same should apply to the captain as well. He should be there for three years,” Afridi remarked.
Turning his attention to the T20 squad, Afridi suggested continuity and stability ahead of the World T20 Cup scheduled for later this year. He advised against making hasty changes and emphasized the importance of providing consistent opportunities to players.
Afridi expressed, “We just need to continue with the same group of players and give them confidence.”
While discussing the T20 squad, Afridi shared his preference for Fakhar Zaman and Saim Ayub as the opening pair. He believes that maintaining a stable lineup and allowing players a longer run will contribute to team cohesion and performance.
The debate over captaincy and team structure continues in Pakistan cricket, and Afridi’s perspective adds to the ongoing discussions about the best approach to leadership and stability within the national team.
