NEW DELHI: Former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel has been named the Senior Observer by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge to oversee the coordination of Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra and other party activities in Bihar.
The announcement, made through a press release by party General Secretary KC Venugopal, comes at a time of speculation regarding Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar‘s potential return to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
Against this backdrop, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president Samrat Chaudhary, former Bihar Deputy CM Sushil Kumar Modi, and Union Minister Nityanand Rai attended the party’s Core Committee meeting in Patna. Earlier, the Bihar state president was spotted at the residence of Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) leader Jitan Ram Manjhi.
Additionally, BJP National General Secretary Vinod Tawde mentioned a scheduled meeting of Bihar BJP leaders in Patna over the weekend to discuss the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The state executive meeting of Bihar BJP is set for January 27 and 28.
The political scenario in Bihar remains fluid, with speculations about Nitish Kumar considering a return to the NDA, which he left in 2022 to form an alliance with the opposition, ‘Mahagathbandhan.’ Several NDA leaders, including former Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, have hinted at a potential breakdown in the alliance between JD(U) and RJD.
If Nitish Kumar decides to switch sides, it would mark the fourth time he has made such a move. In the current Bihar Assembly, the RJD has 79 MLAs, followed by BJP with 78, JD(U) with 45, Congress with 19, CPI (M-L) with 12, and smaller representation from other parties, including Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) and AIMIM.
