NEW DELHI: The Directorate of Estates has taken definitive steps to evict former Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra from her government-allocated bungalow, as per the latest reports from sources. This action follows Moitra’s expulsion from the Lok Sabha last month.
Moitra, who has been a prominent figure in the TMC, was served an eviction notice on Tuesday, mandating her to vacate the bungalow that was allotted to her during her tenure as an MP.

“A team has been sent to evict the TMC leader from the government bungalow allotted to her as an MP,” an official told PTI.

The controversy began with Moitra’s expulsion from the Lok Sabha on December 8 of the previous year. Following this, her allotment of the government house was canceled, and she was initially instructed to vacate the premises by January 7.
After she failed to vacate the bungalow, the Directorate of Estates (DoE) issued a notice on January 8, seeking her response within three days regarding the non-compliance. This was followed by another notice dated January 12.
In an earlier development, the Delhi High Court had intervened on January 4 when Moitra challenged an official intimation that required her to vacate the government bungalow by January 7. Justice Subramoniun Prasad, who presided over the case, mentioned that under certain exceptional circumstances, the rules allow authorities to permit an individual to overstay for up to six months, subject to specific charges.

The court permitted Moitra to withdraw her petition, clarifying that it had not made any observations on the merits of the case. It emphasized that the DoE should decide on her case independently. Additionally, the court noted that legal procedures, including issuing a notice to the resident, must be followed before eviction.
The expulsion of Moitra from the Lok Sabha was a consequence of her alleged involvement in “unethical conduct.” She was found guilty of accepting gifts from businessman Darshan Hiranandani and was accused of sharing her user ID and password for the Parliament website with him.
