With its new batch of flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S24, Samsung introduced a whole suite of AI features dubbed Galaxy AI. These new AI-powered tools will definitely be a huge selling point for the Galaxy S24s, but that does not mean these features will remain limited to these new smartphones. Why should Galaxy S24s have all the AI, right? Samsung will be bringing the Galaxy AI to its older flagships, not that old, though, and it is going to take some time.
Samsung confirmed that the new Galaxy AI features will be coming to last year’s batch of Galaxy flagship smartphones. This includes the Galaxy S23 series- Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, and Galaxy S23 Ultra, as well as the Galaxy S23 FE. Then, last year’s foldables, including Galaxy Z Fold5 and Galaxy Z Flip5, are also eligible for the new AI features.
Not just smartphones but the Galaxy AI features will also be brought over to tablets, including last year’s Galaxy Tab S9 series.
As for when to expect these features on the older Galaxy smartphones and tablets? Samsung says that these should arrive by the first half of the year with the OneUI 6.1 update.
If you have any of these smartphones (or tablets), and wondering, what features would be available on these smartphones? There is no word so far. But, we expect not all of them to be available on the older Galaxy smartphones and tablets, as some of these features are aided by the on-device AI processing capabilities of Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 (or Exynos 2400), which powers the new Galaxy S24 smartphones.

Galaxy AI: Live Translate, Chat Assist, and other AI-powered tools for Galaxy smartphones

The Galaxy AI, powered by Google’s Gemini foundational models, includes new generative AI-powered text, image, and video editing tools.
There is Live Translate for real-time translations during phone calls, Interpreter for split-screen translations of in-person conversations, and Samsung Keyboard AI for translations in 13 languages. Chat Assist helps perfect conversational tone, while Note Assist offers AI-generated summaries, templates, and covers to organise notes efficiently.
Finally, the Galaxy AI editing tools suggest tweaks and give users creative control. Edit Suggestion and Generative Edit fills in parts of an image’s background, while Instant Slow-mo generates frames to slow down videos.

Galaxy AI won’t be free forever

Samsung says that the Galaxy AI is to improve your daily life, it will not do it for free forever. Samsung has mentioned in a footnote on their online listings for the Galaxy S24, S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra that the Galaxy AI features will only be free for about two years.
The footnote says, “Galaxy AI features will be provided for free until the end of 2025 on supported Samsung Galaxy devices. Different terms may apply for AI features provided by third parties.”
It is unclear how much these features will cost after that or if all features will require a subscription.
