NEW DELHI: Indian Navy‘s INS Visakhapatnam, which is on a mission in the Gulf of Aden to combat piracy, recently responded to a distress call from a Marshall Islands-flagged vessel.
The vessel, named MV Genco Picardy, issued the distress call late on Wednesday. Thankfully, there were no casualties reported among the 22 crew members, 9 of whom are Indian nationals. The fire on board the vessel was also brought under control.
In the early hours of January 18, Indian Naval Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) specialists from INS Visakhapatnam boarded MV Genco Picardy to assess the extent of the damage caused by the drone attack. After conducting a thorough inspection, the EOD specialists declared the area safe for further transit. As a result, the vessel is now proceeding to its next port of call.
In a recent incident, another merchant ship in the Red Sea and its nearby region came under attack. This is part of a series of attacks that have been disrupting shipping on a crucial trade route. Indian military authorities have previously responded to similar attacks and hijacking attempts.
Following a comprehensive inspection by navy commandos, the area has been declared safe for further transit. The vessel is now proceeding to its next port of call, according to a statement issued by Indian military authorities.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency confirmed on Wednesday that they received a report of a vessel being targeted by an “uncrewed aerial system” about 60 nautical miles southeast of Aden, Yemen.
The Indian Navy remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of merchant vessels in the region.
