WASHINGTON: External affairs minister S Jaishankar had a conversation with US secretary of state Anthony Blinken regarding the recent attacks on merchant ships by the Yemen-backed Houthi groups in the Red Sea, according to state department spokesperson Matthew Miller.
Miller stated that the two leaders discussed their shared concerns about the reckless Houthi attacks in the southern Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.They highlighted that these attacks endanger innocent mariners, disrupt the free flow of commerce, and violate international law. Both leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to maritime cooperation in the region.
The conversation also touched upon other important topics. Blinken stressed the significance of the Red Sea as a major commercial corridor for international trade. He welcomed increased cooperation with India in safeguarding freedom of navigation in the region. The leaders also discussed the Israel-Hamas conflict and efforts to prevent its escalation, as well as increasing the delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza.
The US secretary of state also brought up Russia’s “war of aggression” against Ukraine during the conversation.
Earlier, external affairs minister Jaishankar had tweeted about his discussion with secretary Blinken, expressing their focus on maritime security challenges, particularly in the Red Sea region. He appreciated Blinken’s insights on the ongoing situation in West Asia, including Gaza, and exchanged perspectives on developments related to the Ukraine conflict. Jaishankar expressed his anticipation for the extensive cooperation agenda between the two countries in 2024.
In December, Blinken had emphasized the deepening partnership between the US and India, along with the elevation of cooperation through the Quad, which includes Japan and Australia. He stated that the US’ partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region have never been stronger.
The Quad, consisting of Australia, India, Japan, and the US, serves as a diplomatic network.
Blinken also highlighted several achievements in the US’ partnerships in the Indo-Pacific, including working on nuclear-powered submarines with the United Kingdom and Australia, establishing comprehensive strategic partnerships with Vietnam and Indonesia, signing a Defense Cooperation Agreement with the Philippines, and initiating trilateral initiatives with the Philippines and Japan. Additionally, new embassies have been established in the Solomon Islands and Tonga.
