Amazon introduces Apple AirPlay rival: All the details about the new video streaming feature – Times of India

E-commerce major Amazon has introduced a new feature that is similar to Apple’s AirPlay feature at the CES 2024 conference in Las Vegas. This proprietary wireless communication protocol allows streaming between Apple devices. However, Amazon’s latest feature will work across different platforms. This tool will help iPhone as well as Android users to wirelessly stream video and other content to its TV hardware.
What is Matter Casting
Amazon’s new feature, called Matter Casting, is part of a push by the company to create interoperable services. This feature will work as an alternative to the proprietary technology developed by Apple and Google.
Matter Casting will also make it easier for iOS and Android phones to send video to Amazon devices. This includes devices like Fire TV boxes and sticks, as well as the Echo Show 15 smart displays.
How Matter Casting is different from Apple and Google’s video streaming feature
Apple’s AirPlay and Google’s Cast have offered this capability for years. This feature allows users to stream videos from their phones on a larger screen (like TV). However these features don’t always work smoothly across platforms.
The new system will initially send content from Amazon’s Prime Video app to Echo Show devices. The company also said that Matter Casting will begin supporting Fire TV technology within “months”.

Amazon has also promised that the feature will work with a range of other video services, including Plex, Pluto TV, Sling TV, Starz and ZDF, by later this year,
Apart from Amazon, tech giants Apple and Google have also worked together to support the Matter standard for smart home appliances. For example, this new system will allow Apple users to tap into smart home hardware designed for Amazon’s ecosystem.
The same technology will be used for TV. Previously, Amazon has allowed streaming from its video app to its hardware, but it didn’t use the Matter system. With this new approach, Amazon sees the potential to make video-streaming apps and TV devices work seamlessly across the Apple, Google and Amazon devices.
