NEW DELHI: Star India batter Jemimah Rodrigues and all-rounder Deepti Sharma have been nominated for the ICC Women’s Player of the Month Award for December 2023, as announced by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Monday.
“Two Indians and a 41-year-old Zimbabwe player have been shortlisted for the ICC Women’s Player of the Month Award for December 2023,” ICC announced in an official statement.
Jemimah Rodrigues had an outstanding month, showcasing her skills across formats for India. The right-hander played a crucial role by scoring fifties in India’s Test victories over England and Australia.
In December, Rodrigues displayed remarkable versatility by delivering impressive batting performances across all formats of the game. After a modest start in T20Is, she followed it up with classy first-innings knocks, scoring 70-plus in India’s two Test victories over England and Australia.
Rodrigues also extended her run-scoring streak in the ensuing ODIs against Australia, scoring 82 and 44 in the first two matches to close the month after averaging over 60 in Tests and ODIs in December.
Deepti Sharma, India’s seasoned all-rounder, was also a vital contributor in the country’s Test and One-Day International matches in December. Sharma’s Test triumph against England was a particular highlight, as he scored 67 and 20 runs while claiming nine wickets.
She subsequently top-scored for India in the next Test victory against Australia, before highlighting her ODI talents, including five for 38 in the second match as India came agonisingly short.
Precious Marange, Zimbabwe’s experienced bowler, had a career-defining run of performances in December when her team won the Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier. She took two wickets in their debut encounter against Kenya before going wicketless against Botswana.
Marange then stepped up, with three successive Player of the Match showings, taking three for 13 against Tanzania, then three for nine against Namibia before her crowning glory – five for seven in the final against Uganda to restrict them to 79 all out, which included a 19th over hat-trick.
