SRINAGAR: With the mercury plummeting to 4.1°C in Jammu late Friday, the winter capital of J&K recorded its coldest night this season so far. Srinagar shivered at -5.4°C again, the same minimum temperature earlier recorded on December 13, 2023, which had been termed the summer capital’s coldest night of the season.
Kashmir’s gateway town, Qazigund, recorded a minimum of -4.6°C; Pahalgam -6.3°C; Kokernag -2.9°C; Kupwara -5.4°C, and Gulmarg -4.5°C, said an official of the Met department. Banihal recorded a minimum temperature of -1.6°C; Bhaderwah -0.3°C and Batote 2.3°C, the official added.
Kashmir Valley is reeling under Chillai Kalan, the 40-day period of harshest winter, which will end on January 30.
The official predicted mainly dry weather for the next 24 hours. Generally cloudy weather is expected with the possibility of light rain/snow over isolated higher reaches on January 8. From January 9-10, generally dry weather is expected, he added.
