Apple makes it almost impossible to get into the iPhone in case you forget the passcode. Leaving users completely locked out with no other option to reset the phone completely and restoring the data from the last backup. This used to solve the problem, but with a lot of effort.
Thankfully, Apple has made things slightly better for users with the iOS 17 update. With the update, iPhone users get a small window in which they can use the previously used passcode to reset the iPhone passcode. But, there are certain criteria that they need to meet.
In this guide, we will discuss all the details about this new passcode reset option along with how to do it. Read on:
Requirements
The option is only available if the user has changed the iPhone’s passcode within 72 hours. Also, users need to remember the last used passcode (exactly the one used before changing it). Another thing to keep in mind is that the feature is available in iOS 17. So, make sure that your iPhone is updated to iOS 17.
How to reset iPhone passcode with the old passcode
Assuming that you meet the requirements, here’s how to do it.

  • Take your locked iPhone and enter the incorrect passcode five times
  • You’ll see “iPhone Unavailable” message on the screen
  • Tap Enter Previous Passcode option and it will take you to another screen
  • On the next screen, enter your old passcode
  • Once you do that, you’ll see a new prompt to change your passcode immediately.
  • Enter your new passcode and unlock the device

If you are sure that you won’t forget your new passcode this time then, you can expire your old passcode by heading to Settings → Face ID & Passcode → Expire Previous Passcode Now → Expire Now.
While the new passcode reset option added with the iOS 17 is a good thing for several iPhone users, it becomes useless once the 72 hour window is over. In that case, the old method of resetting the entire iPhone will still work.
