RAIPUR: A day after a six-month-old girl was killed and her mother injured after being caught in a crossfire during an encounter between Maoists and security forces in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur, the Naxals on Tuesday demanded a judicial inquiry, alleging that the mother and baby were shot when police fired on villagers protesting the felling of trees.
Bastar Police were yet to react to the Maoist statement.
Maoist’s West Bastar division committee secretary Mohan alleged, “Within three days of opening a new police camp in Kavadgaon, the forces killed a newborn.” Ironically, an outlawed insurgent outfit seems to trust the judicial process of the state it’s fighting against.
According to police, the infant and her mother Massi Vadde,30 were hit by bullets during a gunfight between Maoists and security personnel near Mutvandi village. Two DRG constables, Nilesh Tirkey and Umesh Patel, were severely injured in the gun battle.
The Maoists claimed that police fired upon villagers who were protesting deforestation for a road project between Kavadgaon, where a new police camp has been established, and Mutvandi.
