NEW DELHI: In Manipur’s Thoubal district, specifically in the minority-heavy Lilong Chingjao area, tranquility persisted on Tuesday despite the recent violence where four villagers were fatally shot by members of the outlawed People’s Liberation Army (PLA). The death toll rose to four after another victim succumbed to injuries, and two others are in critical condition in an Imphal hospital’s ICU.
Officials provided a breakdown of the events, explaining that PLA militants targeted a resident of Lilong Chingjao, known for several narcotics-related charges.This action quickly drew about 1,000 villagers to the suspect’s home, 15 km from Thoubal, leading to the expulsion of the PLA members.
During their escape, the PLA militants fired randomly at the crowd, resulting in four deaths and several injuries. The Revolutionary People’s Front (RPF), the PLA’s political wing, acknowledged the gunmen were from their ranks and announced an internal investigation. Both groups are banned under India’s stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
The confrontation is believed to stem from a dispute in the illegal drug trade. In response, the police organized a multi-faith meeting, overseen by Lilong MLA Abdul Nasir and community leaders, to defuse tensions.
Manipur’s chief minister N Biren Singh has vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice according to the law and visited the injured at Raj Medicity hospital. Following his visit, he said the state government’s commitment to preventing violence and stated on social media that extensive operations are underway to apprehend those responsible.
To maintain order, additional security forces have been deployed, and vehicular patrols increased. Meanwhile, a curfew in five Imphal Valley districts has led to limited vehicular movement and the closure of most businesses.
The victims, identified as Md Daulat (30), M Sirajuddin (50), Md Azad Khan (40), and Md Hussain (22), were taken to Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal for autopsies. Ten others injured in the clash are receiving medical care, with four suffering from gunshot wounds; two of them are in ICU. In the aftermath, locals set ablaze four vehicles used by the attackers, although their ownership remains unclear.
