NEW DELHI: The Indian Navy on Friday unvieled its new design for Admirals’ Epaulettes, a significant announcement made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Navy Day 2023 celebrations in Sindhudurg.
The design, inspired by the Naval Ensign, incorporates elements from the Rajmudra of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, signifying a deep connection to the nation’s maritime heritage, according to the Navy’s statement.

The Rajmudra, an emblematic seal used by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in his official correspondence, holds great historical significance. It was bestowed upon Shivaji Maharaj by his father Shahajiraje Bhosale and has been featured in numerous historical documents.
This unveiling introduces four distinct designs of Epaulettes. Firstly, the Golden Navy Button, designed to eliminate colonial associations, symbolizes a shift in mindset. Secondly, the Octagon represents the eight cardinal directions, signifying a comprehensive and forward-looking vision. Thirdly, the Sword emphasizes the essence of the Navy’s purpose. Lastly, the Telescope signifies foresight, a long-term vision, and vigilance in an ever-evolving world.

The Navy’s statement highlights that this new design is a true testament to India’s rich maritime heritage.
Earlier, during Navy Day 2023 at Sindhudurg, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced that the new design draws inspiration from the Naval Ensign and Rajmudra of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. He highlighted that the design is a genuine representation of India’s rich maritime heritage.
During the Navy Day celebrations, Prime Minister Modi said, “Inspired by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the nation is moving forward, leaving the mentality of dependence behind. I am happy that the epaulettes worn by our Naval officers will now have a sight of the heritage of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.”
He further added, “New epaulettes will now have a symbol of Shivaji Maharaj’s army. It is my fortune that I had the opportunity to connect the Naval flag with the heritage of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.”
