NEW DELHI: Call it an instant hospital. It’s fully functional with an operating theatre, intensive-care units and critical life-saving equipment — all within minutes, and is mobile.
Sounds impossible?
Developed by experts from the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Defence, and the National Security Council, the disaster mobile hospital folds up into 36 compact cubes, packing in portable XRay, ECG, ultrasound machines and ventilators, and can be assembled in around 12 minutes.
The frugal healthcare innovation, `Aarogya Maitri Aid Cube’, can be transported to war sites or disaster-hit areas, by being airdropped from a plane, helicopter or drone, and could revolutionize critical care in disaster-hit remote areas, sources told TOI.
When not in use in challenging scenarios, these mobile instant hospitals promise to augment poor and inadequate healthcare facilities in remote towns and villages.
“The versatility of Aarogya Maitri Aid Cube is highlighted by its adaptability to various scenarios – from earthquake relief and combat zone support to supplement urban medical facilities or in responding to industrial accidents’’, a senior government official told TOI.
It takes five trained people to set up a fully-operational hospital for doctors to treat surgeries and injuries at the site, and can attend up to 200 patients, emphasizing rapid response and comprehensive medical attention.
Hence, it could serve as a one-stop solution for all health emergencies and disasters, at the impacted location–even quicker than international humanitarian aid agencies, he claimed.
The mobile hospital fits well with the government’s ‘Make in India‘ initiative with about 94% local content, sourced from start ups, he added.
It also includes a mini- refrigerator to maintain the cold chain for temperature-sensitive injectables and medicines.
Some states have shown interest in deploying the mobile hospitals to augment their healthcare facilities. The cost of such hospitals is minimal, he said, adding and will be executed by government-owned HLL Lifecare.
Since these are well-equipped, they could even supplement primary healthcare centres and district level hospitals.
Further, the project follows the government’s ambitious ‘Vaccine Maitri’ initiative during the Covid pandemic, and could potentially establish India as a leader in emergency response. Several heads of state from countries like Japan and Germany looked at it with interest during the recently-concluded G20 summit, the official stated.
