Apple Personal Voice on iPhone, iPad and Mac: What is it and how to make text-to-speech sound just like you – Times of India

In the latest iOS 17, iPadOS 17, or macOS Sonoma, Apple has introduced an innovative feature called Personal Voice. This tool allows you to create a synthesised voice that mirrors your own, adding a personal touch to your digital interactions.
Whether you’re communicating with family and friends through FaceTime, phone calls, assistive communication apps, or even in-person conversations, Personal Voice brings a unique and authentic element to your messages.
To utilise Personal Voice, ensure your device meets the requirements: iPhone 12 or later, iPad Air (5th generation) or newer, iPad Pro 11-inch (3rd generation) or later, iPad Pro 12.9-inch (5th generation) or later, or any Mac with Apple silicon. Additionally, you’ll need Face ID, Touch ID, or a device passcode or password for security.
Creating your Personal Voice is a straightforward process. Simply follow these steps:
On iPhone or iPad:
Open the Settings app.
Tap Accessibility, then select Personal Voice.
Choose ‘Create a Personal Voice’ and follow the onscreen instructions to record your voice.
You can pause and resume recording as needed.
On Mac:
Navigate to Apple menu > System Settings.
Click Accessibility, then select Personal Voice.
Choose ‘Create a Personal Voice’ and follow the onscreen instructions to record your voice.
Similar to iOS, you can pause and resume recording sessions.
It’s worth noting that the recording process occurs securely on your device overnight while it’s charging and connected to Wi-Fi.
Managing your voice is also easy. If you wish to delete a Personal Voice:
On iPhone or iPad:
Open Settings, tap Accessibility and select Personal Voice.
Choose the voice you want to delete and authenticate.
Tap ‘Delete Voice’ and confirm your choice.
On Mac:
Go to Apple menu > System Settings, click Accessibility and choose Personal Voice.
Select the voice, enter your password, and click ‘Delete Voice’ to confirm.
Remember, once a Personal Voice is deleted, it cannot be recovered as it only gets stored on the device and does not get backed up or saved on Apple servers.
How to use the Personal Voice
The Personal Voice feature can be used with the Live Speech feature. With the Live Speech feature turned on from the Accessibility settings, simply type and it will then speak the written text out loud using your Personal Voice that will sound just like you.
