Just like any other app that has a web client, users can link their phones and PCs by scanning a QR code. To use Google Messages on the web:
- Go to: https://messages.google.com/web/authentication. It will show a QR code for pairing a smartphone that has Google Messages app.
- On the phone, open Messages by Google app.
- Tap profile picture in the conversation list and select Device pairing.
- Switch to QR pairing and scan the code on this device.
- Google Messages will connect and you can send messages through PCs.
Google Account-based Device pairing
Google recently rolled out a second way to pair phones with PCs for messaging: Account-based Device pairing. This method does not require users to scan QR codes and instead, they just have to pinch in their account credentials to run Messages app on the web. Here’s how to set up account-based Device pairing:
- Open the Messages app and you will receive a pop-up message for device pairing.
- If not, tap the profile image in the top-right corner and open “Device pairing.”
- You will be directed to a “Device pairing” screen. Users can pair their laptops via the web version that uses the same account number.
- After being prompted to confirm your Google Account (Gmail address), tap “Continue.”
- You will then be instructed to “Open the Messages app on your phone” and “Match the emoji that shows up here and on your phone.”
- You will have a choice to select an emoji to match the one on the web screen on “Trying to pair another device?” sheet.
- Once done, you are signed in.
