NEW DELHI: As the row over a video showing TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee mimicking Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankar continued to dominate headlines for the second day, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi hit out at the ruling BJP for ignoring demands to discuss Gautam Adani, Rafale deal and rising unemployment in Parliament.
He also hit out at the media for only focussing on the video row rather than also discussing the fact that 143 opposition MPs have now been suspended from Parliament.
“MPs were sitting there, I shot their video. My video is on my phone. Media is showing it … Nobody has said anything … 150 of our MPs have been thrown out (of the House) but there is no discussion on that in the media. There is no discussion on Adani, no discussion on Rafale, no discussion on unemployment. Our MPs are disheartened and sitting outside. But you are discussing that (mimicry)…”A major row has erupted between the BJP and opposition parties after a video went viral that appears to show Kalyan Banerjee mocking the VP by ostensibly mimicking his mannerisms while conducting a mock sitting of the House. Rahul Gandhi was seen recording the act on his mobile phone.
Dhankhar later called the conduct “shameful and unacceptable”.
Addressing former union minister P Chidambaram who was in the House, the Chairman said: “Mr Chidambaram you are a very senior member. Imagine what must be going through my heart when your senior leader videographs an MP mocking the Institution of Chairman, as an individual take on me.”
The BJP also hit out at the opposition claiming the INDIA bloc has a tradition of insulting people who come from backward and humble backgrounds and hold constitutional positions.
