NEW DELHI: Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla on Monday assured opposition leaders of a thorough investigation by a high-level committee into the recent incident of security breach in the Lower House.
However, the House faced disruptions and protests from the opposition, demanding a statement from Prime Minister Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shahregarding the security lapse.Eventually, the proceedings were adjourned till noon.
After paying tributes to the late Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Speaker Om Birla briefed the House on the actions taken by the Lok Sabha secretariat in response to the security breach on December 13. He urged cooperation from all members for the smooth functioning of the House.
“We ensure that the matter will be probed by a high-level committee and the probe has begun. Unfortunately, the incident has been politicised,” said Om Birla in Lok Sabha.

Despite these assurances, opposition members persisted in demanding a statement from Shah and his resignation, some members were even displaying placards with their written demands. Speaker Birla objected to the use of placards, emphasizing that it undermined the dignity of the House.
“It is sad that politics is being done on this issue. To enter the Well of the House and sloganeering is against the dignity of the House. I request your (opposition) cooperation to hold discussions on important issues”, said the Lok Sabha speaker.
Parliamentary Affairs Pralhad Joshi appealed to the opposition, urging them “with folded hands” not to wave placards, citing a prior agreement in the Business Advisory Committee meeting. However, the opposition MPs ignored these appeals and continued their protests.

On Monday morning, opposition leaders insisted on a statement from the Prime Minister regarding the significant security lapse.
Congress General Secretary (organisational) KC Venugopal said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who, as per him, termed the incident “serious,” is not ready to discuss the issue in Parliament.
“The PM said this is a serious issue but is not ready to discuss it in Parliament. We have only one demand: we need clarification from the government,” the Congress leader said.
“But the government is not giving any clarification. Then who is politicising the issue?…”, he asked.

Congress MP and leader of the party in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said Prime Minister Narendra Modi should speak in Parliament over the security breach issue, criticising him for taking “four days” to react to the incident. Chowdhury also claimed that Modi broke his silence on the issue because of pressure from the opposition parties and the people of the country.
The security breach, occurring on the anniversary of the 2001 Parliament terror attack, involved two individuals, Sagar Sharma and Manoranjan D, who jumped into the Lok Sabha chamber from the public gallery during the Zero Hour. They released colored smoke and shouted slogans before being overpowered by MPs. Additionally, two others, including a woman, were detained outside the Parliament complex for staging a protest.
