NEW DELHI: The National Investigation Agency on Monday busted a terror module of banned global outfit Islamic State, based in Ballari in Karnataka, arresting eight “highly radicalised” operatives, including the head of the module, during raids across four states. They were allegedly planning to carry out terror strikes, particularly IED blasts, and were also involved in radicalisation and recruitment of youths into IS ranks.
The early morning crackdown by NIA in the case relating to the Ballari module, registered only four days back, covered 19 locations spread across Ballari and Bengaluru in Karnataka; Amaravati, Mumbai and Pune in Maharashtra; Jamshedpur and Bokaro in Jharkhand; and Delhi. The searches were carried out with the active coordination and operational assistance of the state police concerned.
The seizure of explosives components such as sulphur, potassium nitrate, charcoal, gunpowder, sugar and ethanol; sharp-edged weapons; unaccounted cash and incriminating documents along with smartphones and other digital devices in the multi-state raids points to a sinister plan of the module to fabricate improvised explosive devices (IEDs) for use in carrying out acts of terror, said the NIA spokesperson.
The busted IS module – led by Minaj alias Md Sulaiman who was arrested from Ballari – was involved in actively promoting terror and terror-related acts and activities of IS, said NIA. Others arrested on Monday are Syed Sameer from Ballari; Anas Iqbal Shaikh from Mumbai; Mohammad Muniruddin, Syid Samiullah and Md Muzammil from Bengaluru; Shayan Rahman from Delhi and Md. Shahbaz from Jamshedpur.
Investigations have revealed that the accused, in pursuance of the path of violent jihad and IS ideology to create a global Caliphate through violent means, were continuously in touch among themselves via encrypted Apps. They were scouting for potential terror recruits, focusing on college students and trying to radicalise and indoctrinate them by circulating documents and literature relating to jihadi ideology.
Monday’s swoop by NIA is part of its sustained efforts to destroy the Islamic State’s terror conspiracy against India. The agency has carried out several raids in recent months aimed at busting IS-linked modules across states including Kerala, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu. Several terror operatives have been arrested in these raids.
