NEW DELHI: The Congress has scheduled a meeting of its working committee on December 21 to deliberate on the strategy for the 2024 general election and formulate a comprehensive plan for its election campaign against the BJP, according to sources.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has called the meeting, set to take place at the All India Congress Committee headquarters two days after the INDIA bloc meeting on December 19.The agenda will include discussions on the political landscape in the country and planning for the future, with seat-sharing and campaign strategy topping the list, sources added.
The meeting may also explore the possibility of a yatra led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi ahead of the 2024 polls, focusing on issues like unemployment and price rise. The party is considering an east-to-west yatra in hybrid mode, including on-foot components, with a final decision expected soon, sources revealed.
Prior to the Congress Working Committee meeting, the 4th meeting of the leaders of INDIA parties is scheduled for 3 pm on December 19 in New Delhi. Key issues to be addressed at this meeting include the formulation of a “core positive agenda,” seat-sharing arrangements, and plans for joint rallies.
The opposition INDIA bloc aims to emphasize the theme “Main Nahin, Hum” (We, Not Me) as a counter to the Prime Minister during the meeting, as per a senior Congress leader. The CWC meeting will also analyze recent assembly poll results, focusing on defeats in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan, and victories in Telangana, as well as the loss in Mizoram.
The Congress is navigating the challenge of formulating an alternative positive agenda to counter the BJP in the upcoming general elections. There is a prevailing sentiment within the party that unconventional thinking will be necessary to confront the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2024.
