Earlier this year, Google announced that Pixel 8 Pro will get 7 years of OS and security updates, becoming the first Android smartphone to get support for such a long period. The company also announced that along with software, it will offer hardware support and make parts available for seven years. On those lines, the company has introduced a few repair features that will allow users to check if anything is wrong with their Pixel phones.
“Now we’re introducing more repair features that will give you peace of mind if your phone needs to be fixed. Here are three ways we are improving the repair process, including protecting your privacy, providing easy-to-use manuals and making parts and repairs easier to access,” the company said.
Pixel Repair Mode
Pixel Repair Mode is the latest feature that was added with the latest December 2023 Pixel Feature Drop. This mode works like Samsung’s Maintenance mode, and helps users to safely store their data of the Pixel smartphone when their devices go in for repairs. This means that users won’t have to backe up, wipe and restore your data.
Users have to simply turn on the feature on their supported Pixel smartphones, hand over their devices to a repair technician, and then turn it off again when the device is returned.
New app and refreshed repair manuals
In addition to the Pixel software update and repair site, users can launch the Pixel Diagnostic App from your Pixel phone using the Phone App. This will allow users to test their device for issues before and after a repair. Additionally, the feature can be used to check whether the phone is properly functioning once it’s repaired.
How to use Pixel Diagnostic App
The first thing that needs to be done is to connect the Pixel phone to a reliable internet. Then follow these steps to check for issue on your device:

  • Open Phone app.
  • Tap Dialpad and punch in the following: *#*#7287#*#*
  • Follow the on-screen messages.
  • Tap Confirm.

Users will be able run tests of all issues, including fingerprint sensor, and screen, among others. Both the features are available in countries where Pixel smartphones are available for purchase.
Repair centres
Google has also partnered with iFixit to help provide parts for Pixel phones. Google says it has also partnered with independent repair providers, like uBreakiFix, to provide more than 700 locations across the US.
“Most people can get their phone repaired and returned within 2-4 hours if replacement parts are available. And we want this to be as convenient as possible to fit into your day. Over 80% of people with a Pixel device are within 10-20 miles of an authorised repair centre,” the company says.
In India, Google has partnered with F1 Info Solutions & Service to provide post-sale support.
