Grimes, the Canadian singer-songwriter, who is also the mother of Elon Musk‘s three children, has teamed up with a toy company called Curio to create AI stuffed toys. One of the three toys in the collection is named “Grok,” the same name as Musk’s AI chatbot.
“Grok” has the shape of a plush rocketship, and comes equipped with a speaker and microphone, so kids can have conversations with it, either by asking it questions or engaging in imaginary play.Curio says that Grok is a friendly rocket who loves to dance, cannot fly. Its characteristics are “educational, imaginative, and oh-so-entertaining!” All the conversations that the child has with the toy are transcribed and sent to an app on the parent’s phone for monitoring.
Well, Grok is not alone; there are two other toys – Grem and Gabbo. Each one has a unique personality built on top of OpenAI’s model, but all are voiced by Grimes, who is an investor and advisor to the company.
So, do the two have any relation, not Elon and Grimes? They broke up last year (again), but the two Groks, the AI toy and chatbot, whatsoever. The two Groks are completely unrelated, the company told the Washington Post; think of it as a mere coincidence. Curio says that “Grok” is short for “Groket,” which was coined because of Grimes children’s familiarity with rockets since their father, Elon Musk, owns SpaceX.
Musk’s AI chatbot, Grok, is inspired by Robert Heinlein’s novel Stranger in a Strange Land. In the book, Grok is a word that comes from Mars and means “to understand profoundly and intuitively.”
Grem is a space alien, obsessed with the colour pink. Gabbo, a curious figure similar to Pinocchio, is always seeking new friends.
To work, these toys require a Wi-Fi connection. While the founders hope to have all the hardware and software contained within the toy itself one day, the toys will come with an app that provides parents with a written transcript of any conversation their child has with the toys.
The toys are designed to have a child-appropriate, sweet, friendly, and jokester personality. The company is committed to complying with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act. Therefore, the toys will not store any voice data, and the transcripts will be deleted after 90 days.
Grimes and Curio’s AI toys are available for pre-order, priced at $99. The first batch toys are expected to ship in early 2024.
