RAIPUR: Controversial Mahadev Book betting scandal accused Ravi Uppal has been arrested in Dubai and is being deported to India, officials have confirmed.
Uppal and Saurabh Chandrakar, residents of the steel city of Bhilai in Chhattisgarh, are alleged to have operated a vast network of online betting and match-fixing in India and other countries. Enforcement Directorate authorities have been investigating the money laundering case linked to the app, resulting in several FIRs being registered and arrests made.
Officials have stated that Indian police detained 43-year-old Ravi Uppal in Dubai based on a red notice issued by Interpol at the request of the ED. The central agency is in contact with Dubai to expedite further proceedings.
In October of last year, the ED filed a charge sheet against Uppal and Chandrakar before a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court in Raipur. Over the past two years, Chhattisgarh police have filed more than 72 cases, resulting in the arrest of over 440 suspects in the state and other parts of the country.
During the interrogation of numerous individuals summoned by the ED, it was revealed that the Mahadev App had offices in various parts of the state, with transactions amounting to hundreds of crores per day.
In August, the ED arrested four individuals, including ASI Chandra Bhushan Verma, who allegedly disclosed names of individuals benefiting from the money but later denied it in court. The ED also questioned individuals close to the then chief minister Bhupesh Baghel, including his political advisor Vinod Verma and other officers of special duty.
Chandrakar and Uppal came into the spotlight when a video of Shubham Soni claiming to be the owner of the Mahadev App surfaced. Soni named the two as key players involved in significant cricket match-fixing activities in the Middle East, connecting to London, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chhattisgarh, and other places, with money transfers made through Bitcoin wallets. The ED identified the two as ‘key players’ in the Mahadev Book investigations.
In a statement, Uppal and Chandrakar denied their involvement with the app or the betting syndicate, attributing the operation to Shubham Soni, based in Dubai.
While Uppal was previously involved in bore well contracts and oil-related business, Chandrakar ran a juice corner. They crossed paths at a paan stall, bonded over cricket matches and bookies, and joined forces, expanding their business from Chhattisgarh to other parts of the state by 2018. The duo collaborated with IT experts and software engineers in Hyderabad, creating a substantial platform.
Officials allege that Uppal was involved in liaising with politicians and influential people, including businessmen and bureaucrats in Chhattisgarh.
