In October, Tata Group completed the acquisition of Wistron’s iPhone manufacturing plant for $125 million, making it the first domestic iPhone manufacturer in India. Now, the conglomerate plans to build one of the largest iPhone assembly plants in India, tapping Apple’s ambitions to increase manufacturing in the country.
Tata has already acquired Wistron’s assembly plant located near Bangalore, Karnataka. As per Bloomberg’s report,Tata is now planning to build a second factory in Hosur, Tamil Nadu.
The new factory is expected to have around 20 assembly lines and generate employment opportunities for approximately 50,000 people within the first two years of operation. Sources familiar with the matter told the factory is scheduled to go operational within the next 12 to 18 months.
The upcoming iPhone factory is expected to be of medium size compared to other factories around the world. It would be larger than the one Tata acquired from Wistron, which has more than 10,000 employees. However, it will still be smaller than the largest manufacturing facilities owned by Foxconn in China, which have a workforce running into hundreds of thousands.
Apart from constructing a second factory, the Tata group is ramping up recruitment at its existing facility in Hosur, where it manufactures metal casings or iPhone enclosures.
Tata has also announced plans to launch 100 retail outlets that will be exclusively dedicated to Apple products.
Apple has been increasing its production in India in recent years, manufacturing about 7 percent of iPhones, while also sourcing components that go inside as it tries to reduce its reliance on China.
Currently, all iPhone 15 units sold in India are manufactured domestically and are also being exported to other markets
China-based Foxconn, one of Apple’s most significant manufacturing partners, has invested heavily in India. The contract manufacturer is constructing a new plant in Karnataka that can produce 20 million iPhones annually. Another plant of similar capacity is also in the works.
Apple and its suppliers plan to produce 50 million iPhones annually in India within 2-3 years, as The Wall Street Journal reported, accounting for 25 percent of global production by 2030. However, China will remain the largest producer.
