NEW DELHI: The suspense over BJP‘s chief ministerial picks for Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh will be over by this Sunday, the party’s national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya has said.
When asked by reporters whether BJP has taken any decision on its CM candidates, Vijayvargiya said that a clear picture will emerge by December 10.
He, however, refused to divulge any details when asked whether the BJP will choose chief ministers from the recently elected MLAs or bring someone from outside.
The party is soon expected to announce observers for the three states who will take a final call on the CM picks.
Several names figure in CM race
Names of several leaders have emerged as possible contenders for the chief ministerial posts in all the three states but the BJP has so far kept its cards close to its chest.
This time, there is a strong buzz that BJP is likely to go for a new line of leadership in the three states.
Former Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje flew to the national capital earlier today to meet BJP president JP Nadda in Delhi as names of several contenders for the top post started doing the rounds in the media.
Besides Raje, the names of railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, former Rajsamand MP Diya Kumari, Union minister and former Jodhpur MP Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and former Alwar MP Mahant Balaknath are doing the rounds.
In Madhya Pradesh, there is uncertainty whether BJP will persist with four-time chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who played an important role in ensuring the party’s thumping victory.
Earlier this week, Chouhan said that he has “never been a contender for the chief minister post”.
However, Shivraj and his supporters have also been crediting his flagship scheme ‘Ladli Behna Yojana’ for the party’s landslide win. This is being seen as a show of power by the Madhya Pradesh chief minister who is still in the reckoning for the top post.
In Chhattisgarh too, names of several leaders have surfaced as top contenders for the chief ministerial role.
Leaders such as Arun Sao and Gomati Sai, who resigned after their recent electoral victories on Wednesday, are leading candidates due to their social standing, public image and relatively youthful profiles.
Minister of state for tribal affairs Renuka Singh, who met BJP chief Nadda on Thursday, is also seen as a frontrunner.
Earlier on Thursday, BJP held a crucial Parliamentary meeting amid continued suspense over the selection of chief ministers for the three heartland states. The meeting was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and all party MPs.
The BJP swept the assembly elections in the three Hindi heartland states on December 3.
It won 163 of the 230 seats in Madhya Pradesh, recording a landslide two-third majority. In Rajasthan, the saffron party won 115 of the 199 seats where polling took place. Whereas in Chhattisgarh, it won 54 seats in the 90-member assembly.
