NEW DELHI: Amid suspense over who will be the new BJP chief minister of Rajasthan, there were allegations of “resort politics” against party MP Dushyant Singh, who is the son of former chief minister Vasundhara Raje.
Hemraj Meena, father of BJP MLA Lalit Meena, claimed that his son had been held captive in a resort by four other newly-elected party legislators. The father also alleged that it was BJP MLA Kanwar Lal Meena who forced his son to stay at the resort and claimed that this was done on the instructions of Jhalawar-Baran MP Dushyant Singh.
The five BJP MLAs from Kota division had gathered at a resort on the outskirts of Jaipur on Tuesday night. Hemraj Meena said he got a call from his son following which he approached the party leaders and rescued Lalit Meenafrom the resort on Wednesday morning after an altercation with Kanwar Meena.
While Hemraj made the allegations, Lalit Meena did not speak about the incident, which is seen as a attempt at ‘badabandi’ — holing up elected leaders in resorts as a show of strength. “Whatever happened that night, I informed the party leaders. The party is my family and it is our family matter,” Lalit Meena told news agency PTI.
Meanwhile, Kanwar Lal Meena issued a press statement refuting allegations against him and Dushyant Singh and calling them “baseless.” Later in the day, Raje along with her son Dushyant met BJP chief JP Nadda in the national capital. Reports said Raje had sought the meeting to clarify her position.
On charges of altercation in resort, Kanwar Lal Meena said that 30-35 people came there and tried to forcefully take Lalit Meena with them.
“Due to lack of familiarity, we did not send Lalit Meena with them. Later, when his father came, we happily sent Lalit with him,” he said.
Kanwar Lal also defended Dushyant Singh and said the MP was in the Lok Sabha that day. “His presence can be seen in the Lok Sabha. He has been in Delhi since then. I did not talk to the MP during this period,” Kanwar claimed.
The Rajasthan BJP president CP Joshi also denied any attempts at show of stregth. “There is no ‘badabandi’. The MLAs are in their constituencies,” he said, adding that any decision on who will be the chief minister will be taken after the legislature party meeting.
The BJP is yet to announce its chief ministerial pick in Rajasthan amid strong speculations that the party may go for a new line of leadership in all the three states that it won in the just-concluded assembly elections.
