Google launched the Pixel 8 series in October. In September, before launching the latest Pixel models, reports claimed that the tech giant was working on a new feature called ‘Repair Mode’ for its devices. This mode works like Samsung’s Maintenance mode and helps users to safely store away their data when their devices go in for a screen fix or other similar repairs.With the latest December 2023 PixelDrop, the company has added support for the ‘Repair Mode’ for select Pixel devices running Android 14.
Why is it important
Whenever a user goes to get their devices repaired, they have to be careful about their data, especially when devices contain sensitive and private data and photos. To ensure that a repair technician goes through your private stuff, users have to format their devices before handing it over to a service center.
With Repair Mode, users can activate it to protect their private data without resetting the device. This allows a technician to perform any necessary tests on the device but leaves the data on board only accessible to the owner.
How to setup and use
To activate Repair Mode on Pixel devices, users will need at least 2GB of free storage space. Moreover, users also need to set up a lockscreen code to use this feature – PIN, password, and pattern locks are also acceptable.
To enable the Repair Mode, users have to navigate to Settings > System > Repair Mode and tap “Enter Repair Mode.” In its blog post, Google notes that after enabling the feature, the Pixel device will restart and it could take a few minutes to come back up.

First look at the Pixel’s Repair Mode feature
It is important to note that ‘Repair Mode’ will be available in all the latest Pixel devices, except Pixel 5a and the Pixel Tablet. Google is also adding this feature as a part of the first maintenance release of Android 14, which launched on December 6. Only currently-supported Pixel devices will be eligible for Repair Mode. This means that older devices such as Pixel 3 and Pixel 4 won’t have access.
