NEW DELHI: Ranked 220th globally, Delhi University is at the top among Indian universities in the “QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2024,” which features 1,397 institutions across 95 countries. DU is the only Indian entity in the top 300, as IITs from Bombay, Madras, Kharagpur and Roorkee are ranked among the top 400. The University of Toronto is named the world’s most sustainable university, followed by the University of California, Berkeley (UCB) in second and the University of Manchester in third place.
While DU scored high in offering world-class education in environmental and climate-related subjects, it faces challenges in diversity, inclusivity and support and quality of life for students and staff.
56 Indian institutions made it to the ranking and 22 higher education institutions are in the top 700. DU has been ranked 220th globally and 30th in Asia.
There is no Indian university in the top 100. IIT-Bombay bagged the 303rd rank. IIT-Madras is at number 344, IIT-Kharagpur at number 349 and IIT-Roorkee at number 387. IIT-Delhi has been ranked at number 426. Birla Institute of Technology and Science Pilani has been ranked 444, Vellore Institute of Technology has been ranked 449 and Anna University at 496. Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, which has been one of the top performers in the World University Rankings for India, is ranked 505 in this latest sustainability list, while IIT-Kanpur and Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi are ranked 522 and 545 respectively.
QS has prepared the ranking based on three parameters – environmental impact, social impact, and governance. Environmental impact includes climate change commitment, net zero commitment, emission efficiency, academic reputation in earth and environment, while social impact includes parameters like research on SDGs, faculty and student gender ratio, women leadership ratio, disability support, etc.
As per the report, India performs excellently in indicators related to environmental impact. In environmental sustainability, which quantifies an institution’s commitment to, and implementation of, its sustainability and climate strategies, four Indian universities are placed among the world’s top 100, with the national leader, Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), coming 49th-the 10th highest in Asia.
Research and environmental improvement in DU have been appreciated and DU has been given 66th rank in this category. IIT-Madras has been ranked 70th and Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology has been ranked 81st in this category. DU also scores high in providing world-class education in environment and climate-related subjects.
