Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy’s 70-hour work week recommendation didn’t go down well with a section of workers and it also had a lot of backers. The government, on its part, has denied any proposals under consideration on this.
“No such proposal is under consideration of [the] Government of India,” Rameswar Teli, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, said in a written reply to an unstarred question on whether the government is evaluating the 70-hour work proposal made by the Infosys co-founder.
Murthy said that youngsters in India should work 70 hours a week to boost productivity and “compete with the fastest-growing countries like China and Japan”. In conversation with former Infosys CFO Mohandas Pai, Murthy noted that India’s work productivity is among the lowest globally.
OpenAI investor echos Murthy’s recommendation
Vinod Khosla, co-founder of Sun Microsystems and an investor in OpenAI, joined the debate and spoke in support of Murthy. When asked about Murthy’s suggestion, Khosla said that those who felt “attacked” by his views needed mental health therapy.
“For people who ‘felt attacked’ by this they need mental health therapy. They should learn to ‘toughen up’ and not feel attacked. OK to not work 70hrs/wk and live with the consequences of the choices you make. He is speaking to ‘career ambitious’ young people but there are other ways to live with different choices,” Khosla wrote in a post on X.
He said that not working 70 hours a week may not get you the biggest house or car to show to your neighbours, but you can make that choice.
Even his comments were not taken in good taste by some users. One user said that he worked hard but failed.
“What is the purpose of life?,is there any truly valid reason behind our existence or to just work, earn, live with that money and ultimately die,” another said.
