NEW DELHI: Former Union power secretary Anil Razdan on Tuesday said that the cost burden of transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy should primarily fall on developed countries and not just developing nations.
Razdan, who was speaking at The Times of India’s Right To Excellence – Energy Summit 2023, also stressed on the importance of India not just being a buyer but also a developer of renewable technologies through substantial investments in research and development.
In his keynote address at the event, Razdan, who is also the chairman of Energy and Environment Foundation, underscored the significance of what he termed the “Es” in the broader energy context, emphasizing two key mantras: the necessity for energy and equity, and the critical importance of efficiency.
He emphasized that catering to a growing nation’s energy needs requires a balanced approach, acknowledging the complexities involved in ensuring affordable energy for the entire population while navigating the challenges of government subsidies within the constraints of taxation.
Razdan also highlighted the challenges India faces due to its high population density and limited land availability, which can affect per capita energy access.
During the summit, Razdan also advocated for habitats to be as energy-neutral as possible, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive and sustainable approach to energy and environmental considerations.
Several industry leaders, ecopreneurs and policymakers participated in the mega summit in the national capital to discuss strategies for harnessing sustainable energy sources to further push the nation’s growth.
In his opening remarks, Prasad Sanyal, Times Internet’s Business Head, said that India has taken giant strides in the renewable energy sector and described the nation’s journey as both amazing and inspirational.
“Overcoming challenges of size and population, India has showcased its commitment to development while making a significant contribution to the global fight against climate change,” he said.
