Manipur police have arrested three people for allegedly spreading rumours.
The Imphal East district police produced one of them, Moirangthem Shanjit from Bhramapur Bheigyabati Leikai, in court on Sunday after arresting him for allegedly spreading lies to incite hatred and violence among communities in the state’s conflict zones.
Yumlembam Thadoi Devi, 22, of Wangoi Thiyam Leikai and Laishram Roma Devi were the other two people arrested.
Moirangthem Shanjit was accused of creating a false social media account called “Boe Moirangcha”, spreading rumours and uploading information claiming that five individuals had gone missing in Manipur’s Kuki-dominated Joujantak area in Kangpokpi district. The post was widely circulated, causing fear.
