NEW DELHI: The BJP seems to be heading for a comfortable win in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and is ahead of the grand old party in Chhattisgarh. The Congress on the other hand is cruising towards victory in Telangana. The BJP looked set for a fifth consecutive term in Madhya Pradesh with leads in nearly 150 seats and the Congress trailing far behind at around 70 seats in the 230-member assembly.
The BJP was also way ahead of the ruling Congress in Rajasthan, which has traditionally voted alternately for the two parties.While the saffron party was ahead in around 101 seats, over the halfway mark, the Congress had leads in around 70. Voting was held in 199 seats as polling in one was put off due to the death of a candidate.
Meanwhile, trends showed a close contest in Congress-ruled Chhattisgarh with the BJP moving ahead of the grand old party after trailing in initial stages.
In Telangana, the Congress is all set to snatch power from the K Chandrashekhar Rao-led Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) that was hoping for a hat-trick in the state.
With the initial poll trends giving an edge to the BJP in Rajasthan, Union minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on Sunday took a jibe at chief minister Ashok Gehlot, saying people have come out of the spell of the “magician”.
“The ‘magic’ has ended and Rajasthan has come out of the spell of the magician. People have voted for the honour of women and for the welfare of the poor,” he said.
Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan said “I had said the BJP will get a comfortable majority and we are getting it.”
