JAIPUR: Selfie points and certificates to the first-time voters became a hit among the voters in Jaipur. Be it a 60-70-year-old person or first-time voter, everyone was happy to get their pictures clicked at the selfie points at the polling boothsacross constituencies. At many booths, first timers were given certificates by the district election office.
Heavy rush was seen at Shaheed Alok Mathur secondary school situated at Jhotwara where people after casting their votes were halting at the selfie point. “This is interesting. I think voting is a responsibility for us. If a person is not voting he has no right to crib or criticize a government. I will upload my pictures on social media and will use it as my status update on social media,” said Ritika Agarwal, a voter at the booth.
Couples also were eager to get their selfies clicked. “I got my picture clicked with my wife at the selfie point. I think this is a good initiative that has also encouraged young voters,” said Dr Ashok Chaudhary who went to cast his vote at a polling booth situated at Malviya Nagar.
“Frankly speaking, I was seeing the selfies of my friends on social media and thought it would be boring. However, in the afternoon when I went to cast vote I also found it interesting and got my selfie clicked and uploaded it on social media,” said Gaurav Sharma who works at Jaipur airport and cast his vote at a booth under Malviya Nagar constituency.
Faisal Khan, a social worker at Udyog Nagar, said, “Issuing of certificate for first time voters has been a big hit this time. Our block level officer issued certificates to youngsters at booth no. 188.”
Many voters were also aware of the selfie contest run by the election commission and hoped to win the contest. “We have organised a selfie contest to motivate the youth and also to increase the voting percentage. The selfie getting most likes on social media would be awarded with a cash prize of Rs 10,000 as first prize, Rs 5,000 as second prize and Rs 3,000 as third prize,” said an officer of Jaipur’s district election office.
Similarly, the first-time voters were also issued certificates. “I was surprised when I was called and handed over a certificate. I will keep this certificate as a memento,” said Garima Kumawat, a 19-year-old resident of Hari Marg in Civil Lines.
