Samsung has recently started rolling out the Android 14-based One UI 6 update for its smartphone users. A few devices have received the update which brings multiple new features to Samsung’s Android 14 skin. However, some users who have installed the latest update have reported an issue related to the pixel shift feature on OLED screens, which has the potential to lead to screen burn-in.According to a report by FoneArena, the problem was first reported on the social discussion site Reddit.
What are OLED screen burn-ins
OLED screens are susceptible to screen burn-in. This causes permanent discolouration of screens that can affect display quality. Samsung introduced a feature called Pixel shifting in One UI 5 which is designed to prevent burn-ins. This feature seems to be malfunctioning in the One UI 6 update.
How One UI 6 is affecting Samsung displays
With One UI 6, users have noticed that status bar icons are no longer shifting positions as they should. One Reddit user also noted that the issue can be verified with a simple three-step test:

  1. Take a screenshot where the status bar is visible.
  2. Rotate the screen from portrait to landscape and back five times.
  3. Open the screenshot in Samsung Gallery to observe the status bar’s position.

The user has also shared the screenshots taken on both One UI 5 and 6. When compared, the status bar in One UI 6 remains static. This indicates a potential problem with the burn-in protection feature. The Pixel Shift feature seemed functional for the navigation bar, however, the status bar icons were not moving. This hints at a possible bug in One UI 6.0.

Several users have confirmed facing the same issue on the Reddit thread. This raised concerns about the effectiveness of the burn-in protection feature in One UI 6. Samsung is expected to fix this issue with an upcoming software update. However, the company is yet to acknoledge the problem.
